Secularism, Modi, and Indian Muslim

Secularsim’ is a word that has never been so vociferously discussed in the Indian political theatre as in the last one year. The immediate trigger is of course the rise of Narendra Modi in the national politics. Never before in India, has a right-wing nationalistic party caught the imagination of the country so well as BJP has done recently. The only weapons of the opponents (read congress and other pseudo-secular parties) are the so call ghost of secularism. A ghost has been created that BJP is not secular and if it comes to power it will make the life of the minority more difficult. There is hardly any reality in it. In the political history of India, no one faced such merciless character assassination as Narendra Modi did. There has been systematic personal attack on him on the aftermath of Gujarat Riot. None found it necessary to investigate the real reason behind the riot or the spontaneous nature of the riot. Logic suffocated under mindless cacophony. He has been attacked from the left right and the center by the so called caretakers of secularism in India. Their secularism goes blind and deaf when one talks about 1984 pogrom of Sikhs in Delhi or the recent Muzaffarnagar riot.

Muslim-Modi (1)

The reality is that Congress and some other pseudo secular parties like SP and TMC have successfully created fear in the minds of the minorities. The fear that BJP will be a threat to their existence. They talk about Godhra, every time they have to malign Modi, when under the Congress rule a number of riots took place in various Indian states. Congress has polarised Indian minorities and sent them to the ghettos by creating a fear that the rise of any right-wing nationalist party will be dangerous for the existence of Muslim voters. The strategy worked successfully. Muslims voted en masse driven by the fear to keep a right-wing force out of power. Successive congress government did nothing for the upliftment of the Muslims except creating fear in their mind and treating them like a votebank.
This needs to end. The ghost of fear needs to die. It needs to be proved that BJP and Modi are not against the existence of the minorities, that the minorities need to come out of their ghetto mentality and find out the real reason of their under development.

  1. In fact the very argument of Congress that the rise of Narendra Modi will be detrimental to the interests of minorities is sickening. If the results of recent assembly elections to Rajasthan, MP, Chattisghar & Delhi are any indication, minorities are not buying the argument of Congress. Let’s hope the Lok Sabha results also lead to the same conclusion.
